Aquinas Fellowship

The Aquinas Fellowship is a program for young lawyers that examines the relationship between the Catholic intellectual tradition and American constitutionalism. Ideal candidates are in the first decade of their legal careers. The program consists of eight monthly seminar-like discussions hosted at D.C.-area restaurants and features important scholars who lead the conversations. It meets from September through April of each year.

Topics covered include:

The nature of the common good
The relationship between positive and natural law
The role of the natural law in American constitutional law.

Fellows are expected to do a modest amount of reading in preparation for each session.

Please email a resume, statement of interest, and list of references to law-cit@cua.edu. There is no need to submit letters of recommendation; the Fellowship will contact the listed references if necessary. The statement of interest should be no more than one page long, single-spaced, and it should address why the applicant is interested in learning more about the Catholic intellectual tradition and what knowledge and/or experience the applicant will bring to the Fellowship discussions that would make a valuable contribution.

The application period for the 2024-2025 Aquinas Fellowship class has now closed. We will begin accepting applications for the 2025-2026 class in April 2025.

2024-2025 Aquinas Fellows

Benjamin Daus

Benjamin Daus recently completed his service as a law clerk for Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. on the U.S. Supreme Court. He previously served as a law clerk for Judge Amul Thapar of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, as well as for Judge Rachel P. Kovner of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. Mr. Daus also worked as a research associate for Dr. Henry Kissinger and as a research assistant for Dr. Zbigniew Brzezinski. He graduated from Yale Law School in 2021, where he served as Forum Editor for the Yale Law Journal. Mr. Daus earned a master’s degree in philosophy and international relations from the University of Oxford as a Marshall Scholar. He received his undergraduate degree cum laude with distinction from Yale University.

Claire Hungar Chavez

Claire Hungar is a law clerk for Judge Dabney Friedrich of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia and will clerk for Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh on the U.S. Supreme Court in October Term 2025. She previously served as a law clerk for Judge Amul Thapar of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Mrs. Chavez graduated from Yale Law School, where she was a Managing Editor of Development for the Yale Journal of International Law. She earned her undergraduate degree Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Virginia.

Daniel Ruesta

Daniel Ruesta is an associate at Baker Botts LLP. Mr. Ruesta graduated from William & Mary Law School, where he served as a Notes Editor for the William & Mary Law Review. He earned his undergraduate degree cum laude from the University of Florida.

Douglas Gates

Douglas Gates is a senior associate at WilmerHale. Previously, he served as a law clerk for Judge Carl J. Nichols of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia and for Judge Michael S. Kanne of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. He has also served as counsel on the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs. Before his legal career, Mr. Gates had an extensive career as an officer in the United States Navy. He graduated from the University of Chicago Law School. He earned an M.A. with Highest Distinction in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College, an M.A. in Security Studies from the Georgetown University Walsh School of Foreign Service, and an undergraduate degree with merit from the U.S. Naval Academy.

Elle Rogers

Elle Rogers is an incoming associate at Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP. She previously served as a law clerk for Judge James C. Ho of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. She graduated from the University of Chicago Law School. She earned her undergraduate degree from The King’s College, where she was the valedictorian of her class.

GianCarlo Canaparo

GianCarlo Canaparo is a Senior Legal Fellow at The Heritage Foundation. He previously served as a law clerk for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida and as an associate at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. He graduated cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center, where he was an editor of the Georgetown Law Journal, and earned his undergraduate degree with honors from the University of California Davis.

Henry Dickman

Henry Dickman is a litigation associate at Jones Day. He previously served as a law clerk for Justice Amy Coney Barrett of the U.S. Supreme Court, Judge Gregory G. Katsas of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, and Chief Judge Diane S. Sykes of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Katie Smithgall Lane

Katie Smithgall Lane is an associate at Consovoy McCarthy PLLC. Previously, she served as Deputy Solicitor General in the Office of the Montana Attorney General. Before that, she served as a law clerk to Chief Judge Timothy M. Tymkovich of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit and for Judge Thomas A. Varlan of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee. Ms. Lane graduated magna cum laude from Antonin Scalia Law School, where she also served as Editor-in-Chief for the George Mason Law Review. Marquan Robertson

Marquan Robertson is an associate at Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP. He served as a law clerk for Judge Carl E. Stewart of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Michael Bradley

Michael Bradley is an associate at Jones Day. He served as a law clerk for Chief Judge William H. Pryor Jr. of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit and for Judge Thomas M. Nicholas Schilling

Nicholas Schilling is a criminal trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice. As part of that role, he briefly served at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia. He previously served as a law clerk for Judge David J. Porter of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and for Judge Stephen J. Murphy, III, of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. Mr. Schilling graduated magna cum laude from the University of Notre Dame Law School. Paul Schmitt

Paul Schmitt is an attorney at Brown & Streza LLP. Previously, he worked as legal counsel for Alliance Defending Freedom. He served in the United States Air Force, reaching the rank of Captain. Aaron Haviland

Aaron Haviland is an associate at Sidley Austin LLP. He previously served as a law clerk for Chief Judge William H. Pryor, Jr., of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit and for Judge Diarmuid F. O’Scannlain of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Mr. Haviland is a graduate of Yale Law School. Prior to law school, Mr. Haviland served in the United States Marine Corps, leaving active duty with the rank of Captain. He received a master’s degree in International Relations from the University of Cambridge and earned his undergraduate degree with Distinction from the United States Naval Academy.

Andrew Ebrahem

Andrew Ebrahem previously served as a law clerk for Judge Allison J. Rushing of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and for Judge John B. Nalbandian of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Bijan Aboutorabi recently completed his service as a law clerk for Justice Clarence Thomas on the U.S. Supreme Court. He previously served as a law clerk for Judge James L. Mr. Showalter is a graduate of Yale Law School, where he was Comments Editor for the Yale Law Journal, and he received his undergraduate degree with Highest Distinction and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Michigan.
